Since Filipinos are known for having a strong work ethic and for being resilient, it should come as no surprise that many of us look for employment abroad in order to give our families access to better opportunities. Nevertheless, working abroad can be difficult, particularly for new Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
I worked as an OFW for a total of 6-7 years and, excluding the Philippines, in 3 other nations.
I’ll offer some advice in this piece to make the move simpler and guarantee a positive time working abroad.
1.) Research about your destination country
It’s crucial to investigate your target countries before leaving the Philippines. Learn about the customs, traditions, laws, and culture of the nation. You’ll avoid culture shock and be able to adapt to your new surroundings more readily as a result. In order to manage your budget and get ready for your new house, you can also learn about the cost of living, the climate, and the housing possibilities.
2.) Learn the language
Any job requires effective communication, and learning the local tongue can help you establish a rapport with your coworkers and clients. If you are not a native speaker, think about enrolling in language classes either before you depart or once you are there. It can be easier to navigate and settle into a new situation if you even know the fundamentals.
3.) Keep in touch with loved ones
Being apart from your family and friends while working overseas can be emotionally taxing. Make an attempt to communicate with your family and friends back home by calling, using messaging services, or having video chats. Even though you are geographically separated, this will make you feel connected and supported.
4.) Save money and budget wisely
In comparison to what you would make in the Philippines, you have the chance to earn more as an OFW. However, in order to maximize your earnings, it’s crucial to budget sensibly and save. Make a budget plan, follow it, and refrain from overspending on pointless purchases. To safeguard your financial future, think about investing in a savings account or other investment possibilities.
5.) Take care of your physical and mental health
It’s crucial to put your health first because working abroad can be mentally and physically taxing. Consume nutritious foods, get adequate sleep, and exercise frequently. Make time for self-care activities that will help you relax and unwind, such as hobbies or meditation. Do not be reluctant to seek expert assistance if you are experiencing mental health problems.
6.) Follow local laws and customs
Even if they differ from your own, respect the laws and traditions of your host nation. Ignorance of the law is not a defense, and breaching it can result in serious repercussions like deportation or incarceration. Be aware of regional traditions and manners, including dress codes, social mores, and religious beliefs.
In conclusion, being an OFW and working abroad may be a rewarding and hard experience. You may make the move smoother and guarantee a positive employment experience by paying attention to these suggestions. Remaining optimistic, adaptable, and open-minded will help you succeed as an OFW and adapt to your new environment.
There’s a reason why OFWs are called the modern day heroes…
Cheers to all OFWs!
