OFW Mental Health Issues

(Coping with Mental Health Challenges as an OFW)

I have been an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) for three different countries, so I know what it is like. A few months ago, I gave a presentation on this subject at the company where I was employed.

(Thanks to Fifi for making me a resource speaker on the topic.)

From communication difficulties to cultural shock, OFWs have a lot to deal with. Maintaining emotional wellness while living abroad is one of the greatest struggles of overseas workers. An OFW’s mental health might take a serious hit due to the negative effects of homesickness, loneliness, and isolation. Here, we will talk about the difficulties of maintaining mental health while working abroad and offer advice on how to do so.

Feelings of Homesickness Are Quite Normal

It is normal for OFWs to feel homesick and long for their loved ones back in their native country. Sadness, anxiety, and even physical problems like headaches and stomachaches can result from being separated from loved ones. Managing feelings of homesickness might be difficult, but it is possible.

Keeping in touch with friends and family back home is a great way to combat homesickness. Video conversations, messaging apps, and social media have made it simpler than ever to maintain personal relationships. It is important for OFWs to have regular contact with their families back home. Doing so can provide emotional support and help reduce feelings of isolation.

Separation and loneliness

Another prevalent difficulty for OFWs is feelings of loneliness and isolation. It can be difficult for an overseas worker (OFW) to adapt to life in a new nation if he or she does not know the language and has no local support system. Loneliness and isolation are possible outcomes of inadequate social support.

Socializing and making friends can help OFWs feel less lonely and isolated. Getting involved in a local club or organization can be a great way to expand your social circle. OFWs should also take advantage of opportunities to connect with other OFWs, such as local events and online communities.

Taking Care of One’s Mind

Many things can be done to help OFWs keep their minds healthy, including keeping in touch with loved ones and making new friends.

Here are a few pieces of guidance:

Self-care is important, thus it is important for OFWs to take some time for themselves to do things like exercising, reading, or watching a movie that they enjoy. If you take care of your body, you will feel better emotionally, too.

If an OFW is experiencing mental health problems, they should seek professional care. Free counseling services are available through Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offered by many companies. Mental health treatment for OFWs can also be found in their local communities.

Maintain an upbeat attitude.

Looking on the bright side can do wonders for one’s state of mind. The opportunity to work abroad and provide for one’s family is a blessing that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) should be thankful for.

Theme parks are always fun. It thrills me.

For overseas workers to survive and achieve, it is essential that they keep their mental health in good shape. Staying in touch with loved ones, going out and mingling with others, and engaging in self-care routines can all help reduce homesickness, loneliness, and isolation.

OFWs can have a positive time abroad and reach their goals if they prioritize their mental health.

Wish you all a healthy mind and body!

Cheers!
